All eyes on deck!

Time for another weekly update.

This past week, my focus has been on security—particularly cybersecurity.

Cybersecurity is rightly a hot topic for policymakers and companies alike, though I’d argue it hasn’t gained enough attention within the creative community. This is concerning, as cybercriminals—especially state-sponsored groups—are increasingly targeting the intersection of entertainment, financial technology, and intellectual property. The music industry, with its vast digital ecosystem, has become an attractive target for sophisticated cyberattacks designed to exploit vulnerabilities and divert revenue.

Groups like the Lazarus Group, linked to North Korea’s Reconnaissance General Bureau, have been responsible for attacks on cryptocurrency exchanges, entertainment companies, and music streaming platforms, aiming to generate illicit revenue to fund national programs.

The entertainment sector, including music, is facing threats from:

  • Fake Apps and Credential Theft
  • Phishing Campaigns
  • Ransomware
  • Botnet Manipulation

The potential impact of these attacks on the music industry is substantial:

  • Diverted Royalties: Fake artist profiles and manipulated streaming metrics lead to royalties being paid to fraudulent entities.
  • Reduced Streaming Revenues: Unauthorized copies of music distributed by hackers decrease legitimate streaming and associated revenues.
  • Compromised User Trust: Malware infections and fake apps can damage user trust, reducing engagement with platforms.
  • Increased Cybersecurity and Legal Costs: Defending against these attacks adds significant operational costs.
  • Reputational Damage: High-profile breaches can erode user trust and market share, worsening financial impact.

So, what can we do about this? (Or more accurately, what is already being done but have yet to be implemented?).

Here’s a start:

  • Immutable IDs verify the identity of artists, ensuring royalties go to legitimate creators rather than fraudulent profiles.
  • Multiwrap Contracts and staking/validation mechanisms (like Power of Content, PoC) confirm the authenticity of copyrighted works on a decentralized ledger.
  • AI-Powered Anomaly Detection: Tools that identify unusual activity patterns on streaming platforms.
  • Real-Time Monitoring: Advanced scanning and detection of unauthorized usage of music metadata across platforms.
  • Verified Licensing: Issuing licenses only to verified entities makes it harder for hackers to infiltrate with unauthorized music.
  • Preventing Derivative Works Exploitation: Combat hackers who create altered works to mislead platforms and siphon off revenues.

In regions where legal action is ineffective, such as those with weak enforcement or anonymous cybercriminals, traditional methods may fail. Here, comprehensive metadata management systems become crucial:

  • Immutable Records: Storing metadata immutably using blockchain creates a reliable source of truth to demonstrate ownership.
  • Proactive Protection: Shifting focus to proactive detection and prevention reduces the likelihood of exploitation.
  • Community-Based Enforcement: Leveraging decentralized governance models where participants collectively stake and validate content, bypassing weak legal systems.

To further enhance security, tools like quantum anomaly detection and metadata validation provide extra layers of protection, future-proofing the industry against increasingly sophisticated threats.

The conclusion? Combining expertise in music copyright management with evolving AI capabilities offers a strong defense against both state-sponsored and independent cybercriminals. By adopting advanced tools already available, the music industry can better protect against financial losses, create a fairer and more secure environment, and build resilience against future threats.

This synergy of AI, blockchain, and decentralized governance forms a robust barrier, potentially saving the industry over $400 million annually.

To combat increasingly sophisticated cyber threats, we need increasingly sophisticated tools. Simple as that. Oh, and we actually need to implement them when they exist… Did I forget to mention that?
