FutureProof?

It’s not uncommon for me to say in keynotes, panels, and presentations: “A music streaming service without music is nothing — but music without a streaming service is still… music.” This quote reflects a core belief that continues to guide my work: advocating for the creators whose work forms the very foundation of the business models built around it. That said, there’s no doubt that technology — and the innovative solutions of tomorrow — are essential enablers for the entire ecosystem. Without forward-thinking tech, we remain locked into outdated and, in many ways, dysfunctional models that fail to compensate creators fairly for the actual use of their music. This imbalance doesn't just impact individual artists outside the top 2% of commercial success — it affects the entire value chain. We’re dealing with leaks in revenue distribution, legally fragile copyright registrations, and an inability to fully leverage transformative technologies like AI. Instead of moving toward scalable, future-facing innovation, the industry is forced into a defensive posture, which only deepens the gap between creativity and opportunity, visibility and fair royalties. Fortunately, solutions do exist — and this is where I focus much of my energy: championing cross-industry collaboration and co-innovation beyond the traditional silos. It’s precisely this kind of thinking that allows us to develop business models that are fit for purpose — and future-proof. Below, you’ll find a few examples of initiatives I’m currently involved in — along with others I’ve contributed to in the past. Several new projects are also underway, and I’ll be sharing more about them here when the time is right.

The Global Music Vault

Board member & advisor. The Global Music Vault was initially conceived as a cultural counterpart to the seed vault in Svalbard — a secure archive designed to protect humanity’s most valuable musical treasures from global catastrophes, such as nuclear disasters that could instantly wipe out traditional digital storage. This forward-thinking vision led to a groundbreaking collaboration with Microsoft, which developed a revolutionary storage solution: a small piece of quartz glass capable of holding vast amounts of digital information. Unlike conventional hard drives and servers, which degrade over time and require significant energy, this glass-based medium can preserve data for up to 10,000 years — with little to no electricity needed. This project places us well ahead of the curve, exploring truly sustainable, long-term preservation of cultural heritage. We look forward to when this solution is deployed at scale, securing the sounds of history and our time for generations to come.

The Fair Music Project

As an advisor, I’m thrilled to see how the Fair Music Project, through the collaboration between the International Music Council (IMC) and New Internet Media (NIM) — supported by leading international music stakeholder organizations and Co-Funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union — is helping burst silos and build bridges across disciplines. It´s also exciting how closely the project aligns with UNESCO’s newly published Red Teaming Playbook, a forward-thinking framework for evaluating and improving AI systems for social good. The EU-backed Fair Music Project aims not only to explore, in theory, how new technologies like AI and blockchain can shape a fairer, more transparent music industry, but also to demonstrate concretely how tech-driven, co-innovated systems and tools, created in collaboration with creatives, can help the music industry move past the barriers keeping it rooted in the present. In an industry clinging to old models in hopes that the future will arrive on its own, it’s becoming increasingly clear that holding on is no longer an option.

New Internet Media

The collaboration with New Internet Media, and the insight into both their achievements and ongoing developments, has been not only an eye-opener but also a strong incentive to work harder toward real change through concrete action. As an advisor in recent years, I am proud to have contributed to initiatives such as a legally robust platform for registering music and other intellectual property—integrated with advanced royalty tracking, transparent and accurate distribution, and cutting-edge copyright DNA technology. Rather than viewing the AI revolution as a threat, NIM sees it as a historic opportunity—one that, through their systems, can unlock entirely new revenue streams for creators. By engaging with creators, investors, institutions, policymakers, and global stakeholders, they position themselves not as another middleman, but as enablers. Their mission is to empower each creative community to generate value within itself, while also bridging the silos that have long divided the creative industries. NIM’s message is simple: It’s your copyright—and your money. I couldn’t agree more.
